The CS2: Performance Tuning Evolved

If you’re looking for the best in non-touchscreen tuning from Edge, the Evolution CS2 is the programmer for you. If you are looking for the Touch screen version, The Evolution CS2 is NOT a touchscreen tuner.you want the Evolution CTS2, so go check that one out. While the settings are very similar from one to the other, we want to make sure this is clear up front.

The CS2 is NOT a Touch Screen Device.

The The Edge Evolution CTS2 is a touch screen tuner.CTS2 is a Touch Screen.

Now that that’s done, we can move on to more important things.

Whether you’re looking at the CS2 or CTS2, Edge has packed in tons of great features and cutting edge tunes for your specific make and model vehicle. While the CS2 is not capable of custom tuning, the pre canned or loaded tunes on the CS2 are made specifically, or custom, for your vehicle by the engineers over at Edge. The goal is to maximize performance on your vehicle for whatever you are looking to do with it.

If you The many shades of the Evolution CS2 tuner from Edge.are trying to tune your daily driver to get improved gas mileage, the economy or fuel efficiency mode can do that. Looking to up your horsepower for the race track? Performance mode will get you there. Need to do some serious towing? Tow mode adds the torque you need.

And some of us are just looking to adjust throttle response and / or reduce pedal lag. The CS2 can do that too. This baby really does evolve your engine and unleash the beast under the hood.

But for me, one of the most important features of the CS2 is the ability to disable AFM and MDS.

Disabling AFM / MDS

Those of you driving around in Ford Trucks--yeah, F-150 owners, I’m talking to you--you don’t have to worry about any of this nonsense. Ford beat the EPA fuel economy targets by taking another route: Turbocharging. Don’t worry. I’ll have something just for you below in a bit.

For just Shut off AFM and MDS with Edge Evolution CS2 Tunerabout everyone else, listen up. Cause you need a tuner more than most, my friends. That’s right, if you’re a Chevy / GMC or Dodge Ram owner and your driving around a truck made in the last 10 years, chances are good, you’re engine has been severely hamstrung.

That’s correct. In order to meet those government standards your manufacturer (and mine too, cause I’m a Chevy owner) did something many of us now regret. They limited how many of your engine’s cylinders are active at any give time.

It doesn’tEdge Evolution CS2 is a premiere programmer. matter what you call it really. They keep changing the names anyway. One year it’s Active Fuel Management. Then it’s Dynamic. Or Chrystlers’ variant Multiple Displacement System. Jazz it up however you like, folks. It’s limiting your engine’s ability to produce power.

Now on most models it isn’t supposed to kick in until you’re moving 30 MPH or so, but I’ve heard stories. And it isn’t supposed to affect the way the truck drives, but I’ve personally seen it do otherwise when I’m struggling to get up a steep hill in the backwoods of Missouri, so yeah, I don’t buy it.

But it does do at least two things: shut off half your cylinders at a particular moment in time and piss me off.

Again, this was all done to try to improve fuel economy to meet specific government Evolution CS2 Tuner from Edgestandards, but what it also does, and note these were all likely unintended consequences, is limit power and performance, alter wear and tear on your engine, cause strange shifts, especially when underload and going up or down hill, and various other smaller issues.

Some of us, myself included, have even been able to improve our fuel economy by disabling AFM or MDS, which leaves us all wondering what exactly this damn thing The back of the CS2 is made for a mount that comes in the box.does anyway. I mean, if you’re still moving the same amount of mass via a combustion engine and you want to go a particular speed in that vehicle, isn’t it still going to take roughly the same amount of fuel to get her up and going, regardless of how many cylinders are firing? I get that my four banger little car gets better fuel economy than my truck, but it’s also like a third the weight and size and rides lower to the ground. Furthermore, I got the car for the fuel economy and commute. I got the truck for power, hauling, towing, and having fun--not fuel economy, thank you very much!

But I digress.

Point is you’re probably going to be wanting to disable that AFM / MDS stuff soonerEvolution CS2 Tuner from Edge rather than later because as so many of us have found out, over time, especially on particular makes / models / years of trucks, these systems can seriously damage your engine. So while for everyone else, getting a performance tuner is more about style, customization, specific tunes, calibration, and just being an all around bad ass, for us Chevy / GMC / Dodge owners, it’s about all those things and then disabling AFM and MDS.

PSA over. Returning to our regularly scheduled tuner coverage.

VGT or Variable Geometry Turbochargers

Alright, I promised I’d have something for the Ford drivers, and here it is plus its for anyone with a VGT or Variable Geometry Turbocharger, but I figure those who have one stock are more likely to be looking for this kind of tuning. If you’re rocking a turbo, especially on a diesel, there’s a pretty good chance you might have a VGT or variable geometry turbo.

TheseEdge Evolution CS2 is a great in cab monitor and tuner types of turbochargers are able to vary the flow rate of exhaust gases through the turbine in order to adjust based on your RPMs how much extra vacuum power you’re gonna need. Now we aren’t saying this is perfect technology, but when it works right, these turbos are some of the best ways to maximize your engine’s performance in one go. And the improved throttle response from one of these bad boy’s ain’t nothing to shake a stick at either.

And if you’re rocking one of these babies, the CS2 has the ability to modify the way it works. The goal here is to be able to extend the longevity of your VGT and make it play nice with your new tunes. While adding horsepower and torque, especially on a diesel application, is both easy and amazing, your turbo, especially your VGT, may not be prepared stock for this adjustment of added fuel and power. So by making adjustments on the backend to your VGT, you can help your new tunes and VGT to work well in tandem to hopefully boost power and keep your VGT running accurately and longer.
