Check out these rugged Westin HDX Nerf Steps today.
No time to read this whole article? Just want the quick and dirty dets? “Too long; didn’t read” your fav acronym? Don’t worry. We hear ya. Here’s our Midwest Aftermarket Bullet Point Breakdown of the Westin HDX Drop Steps:
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: lots of hoop and drop steps just aren’t big enough for my foot. Not to brag, but I’ve got a rather sizeable shoe--a thirteen to be exact. Alright, I can cram into a 12 and a half American style, but who wants to cram, am I right?
And that’s not counting the additional size of tennis shoes or heavy boots. I’m typically not rocking steel toes or anything like that, but if you were, you’re likely in the same boat as me. So when I go to shop for step bars, I want to know how much of a drop they have and how much space I’m going to have on those step pads.
In fact, one of my biggest concerns with drop steps in general is the size of the step plates. I’ve had running boards, oval steps, all sorts of large bars, but the ones I often struggle with are smaller hoop style steps. Too many of those on the market just aren’t wide enough for me or I have to step funny to get a good solid push off of their bars.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want a step bar that is difficult to use. I want it to feel natural and easy to get in and out of my cab. Heck, a step bar is supposed to easily facilitate getting into and out of your truck or Jeep. So any prospect of a bar that doesn’t make it easy, a step that is difficult for those of us with larger feet / shoes to use, is something that turns me sour right away.
I’ve seen some great attempts over the years, and don’t get me wrong here. I absolutely love the style of the drop step or hoop steps that you have likely seen all over the Internet or on your buddies’ vehicles. These nerf steps look great. They have that rugged appeal, and cool drop down style, and, for these Westin’s at least, they look like they belong there. And for me, that’s a big part of it.
I want a step that is so natural that it looks like it came that way off the lot. Then when my bro asks me about them, I want to be able to tell him they are aftermarket, they are Westin steps. There’s just something about showing off your new accessory and having that slight tinge of jealous, right? I feel it all the time when a friend shows off his new wheels or steps or tonneau.
Heck, just the other night I saw a sick matte black folding tonneau on a guys truck, parked next to mine, over at B-dubs. Damn, it looked sweet. And it made me want to see what that style would look like on my truck too.
Westin’s HDX Drop Steps do just that. When you see them on a truck, you want to see what they look like on your truck. And the fact of the matter is, they aren’t just all about style or looks. No, they have great form and function too.
And to return to my previous point, why would I want a step bar that looks great but doesn’t work for my shoe size? Westin has covered the bases with these HDX bars. They have that sweet aftermarket look I crave with the great application and size my boot needs.
The next thing on my mind after picking a style I want is the install. Since the Westin HDX Step Bars are custom for your specific make and model and year vehicle, for nearly all truck’s on the market, these babies install using existing factory holes.
So we are talking about a true no drill install. There’s nothing worse than getting in a new part for your truck and finding out your gonna have to drill into the bed or rocker panels to install it. Don’t get me wrong, I have on occasion done so--drilled in my new truck. But I can’t think of any time I’ve ever wanted to drill into it. Every new hole is a potential place for rust damage and corrosion to take hold. I’ll pass on it every time if I can.
But great designers and engineers like the folks over at Westin have the perfect solution: no drill installs. Westin’s HDX steps can replace your OE steps and / or be attached to your rocker panels using existing factory holes.
And the installation is so simple that one or two people should be able to handle it in under 30 minutes at home in the comforts of your home garage. If you are all about the do it yourself, then these steps are for you.
And when you’re done, you’ll be able to look back and see how much style those bars add to your truck.
Next you’ll probably want to make sure you protect your investment for years to come. First, you’ll be happy to note that Westin has you covered with their 3 year warranty. Nothing like a company that has your back.
Then you’re gonna want to know what these bars are made of. And the answer is that these babies are made from a steel and a solid one piece construction. We all know how heavy duty steel is. This is the material we use to build skyscrapers and tractors and all sorts of huge devices that are built to last a lifetime. Why wouldn’t you want steps made out of it?
But you’ll want to finish it as well. And Westin has that covered too. While some like the look of painted steel, around here we are all about that textured matte black powder coat finish. And the reasons aren’t lost on us either.
First, it looks badass. Come on. Matte black is in and textured finishes are rough and built to take a beating and then some.
And one of the biggest questions we field about steps is whether or not they will rust. Nearly any metal on the planet will oxidize if exposed to water and oxygen. That’s just science. So your fears are legitimate.
Luckily for us, Westin has you covered again. They powder coated these great steps in a textured finish to protect that steel from corrosion. If you live in an area like us, our concerns are quite real. We have rough winters, and the first thing that happens when we get a lot of snow (or often even the night before) is that the roads get treated with chemicals and salt. Nothing is worse for corrosion of metal than this combination: salt plus slushy melting snow plus air equals bad times at the local aftermarket show.
But that powder coat helps keep the salt and chemicals and snow off the steel. As long as the finish remains in-tact, your step bars should not experience any unexpected rust or corrosion. Now things do happen. You get in an accident or scratch up the finish real bad to the point at which it allows moisture in, then this steel will rust just like any other steel, so certainly try to take care of your bars and repair the textured powder coat finish if you ever note any damage on it.
Regardless, you can tell a lot of great design work went into these HDX steps and that by using great materials and excellent construction, these babies are built to last.
