When it comes to stylish headlights that make you stand out from the crowd, Spyder as a brand and a company is simply hard to beat. Some of the sharpest new headlight units we saw this year at SEMA were at Spyder’s booth. Specifically, these black background, DRL integrated Projector style headlights are super sick. CAD designed to fit your specific year, make, model vehicle, these DRL bar headlights are easy to install, often involving just a simple plug and play clip or three each and a few bolts that utilize the factory installation points. What really makes these beams stand out though isn’t their throw distance. It’s that sweet wrap around daytime running light bar or halo. For most makes, I’d refer to it as a half demon eye or half halo, but what do I know? In fact, all I know is these headlights provide you with a unique, truly custom look that is going to set your vehicle apart. Let’s dive head first into this high beams from Spyder. Don’t get caught in the web. Tee-hee!
No time to read this whole article? Just want the quick and dirty dets? “Too long; didn’t read” your fav acronym? Don’t worry. We hear ya. Here’s our Midwest Aftermarket Bullet Point Breakdown of the Spyder Black DRL Projector Headlights:
At the end of the day, headlights exist for two reasons--one which is obvious to nigh everyone, one just apparent to those who are already a part of the aftermarket community:
Lighting up darkness
And looking cool AF!
When it comes to Spyder’s new DRL Projector Headlights which they were showing off at SEMA this year, they’ve got both in spades and then some.
And there’s more than two reasons to pick up these new headlights from Spyder Auto, but those are the first and most popular ones, so let’s get those out of the way right off the bat.
These headlights are going to be equivalent if not better than most stock headlights. And the projectors are adjustable on most makes and models, so you can aim the beam better to your liking.
Secondly, just take a look at the image above. I know they say a picture is worth some words or something like that, but for seriously, these headlights just look amazing and unlike anything else currently out there on the market today.
That dual or wrap around Daytime Running Light Bar really makes these headlights pop in the night. They are going to look substantially different than stock headlights and make your ride the envy of all your friends.
So now that we have the easy reasons to buy out of the way, let’s talk about the less obvious ones.
First, these headlights are designed using imaging software and measured exactly to give you a precision fit. This means they should fit exactly where the stock headlights went and leave no gaps for water or dust to get in.
If you experience any issues with fitment or installation, definitely reach out to Spyder directly because they have a solid one year warranty and will work with you to get the situation rectified.
First things first though, we highly recommend that you get these lights professionally installed. While it is possible to install these in the comfort of your home garage, any time you’re dealing with wiring and lights than may need some adjustment, we tend to go with the pros around here.
Spyder is in no way responsible for the wrong positioning of the headlight beams. But it is still very important that you make sure your beams are not directed into on-coming traffic. The last thing you want is to blind any driving the opposite direction, so professional installation isn’t a bad move with any headlights.
Spyder Auto puts these babies through rigorous testing. Their quality control is no joke. All the wiring has been tested and double checked. So if you run into any fitment or issues, you should contact Spyder immediately to get the issue resolved.
Do note that most of these headlights are only officially compatible with the type of headlight bulb that comes with them. In other words, if you order a Spyder DRL Projector Headlight with Halogen bulbs and then install other aftermarket LED’s or HID bulbs you will be voiding your warranty with Spyder. With that being said, we have heard of customers replacing bulbs with other aftermarket ones without any issues, but you should still be well aware of that fact.
Furthermore, these headlights may be available in several styles or varients. For example, for some makes and models, these headlights feature LED turn signals and LED Daytime Running Light bars. For some years, makes, and models, however, only one type of bulb may be available. So do double check the listing or give us a call to make sure you are getting the version you desire.
Likewise, these headlights are not officially compatible with the OEM HIDs nor OEM LED headlights for most makes and models. This doesn’t mean they won’t work with aftermarket LEDs or HID bulbs installed. Rather the custom fitment of the housing itself may not work with the OEM LED or HID style headlights as the shape or size may vary. So if you have the LED or HID package of headlights stock from the original manufacturer equipped on your vehicle, there is a decent chance that these headlights are not compatible because they may not fit as an exact aftermarket replacement of the OEM product.
These are just some common issues that honestly you run into with just about any headlight assembly replacement. So again, read carefully and make sure you order the right product for your ride.
Disclaimers done.
Let’s get back to the epic lights on these sweet Spyder’s.
These babies are built to last. They are super temperature resistant, able to handle extreme temperatures up to 175 degree range Fahenhiet and all the way down to extreme lows of negative 40. They are designed with superior voltage protection, and able to handle excesses over the required 12.8 volts and even deal with lower voltages. Do note that if you are experiencing less than optimal brightness out of these lights once installed, it could very well be a wiring issue or that they just aren’t pulling enough volts. Again, we recommend you check with a professional installer to try to correct this issue. But if you’re a DIY guy at heart, you could check the voltage with a voltmeter and see if it is too low. While being lower than the optimal level will not damage these lights, they will only be able to put out so much light if they are drawing below that level.
Furthermore, these lights come with several adjustment knobs located on the backside of the house which will allow you to alter the aim of the beams. We again recommend that a professional installer handle this adjustment, but you can attempt to adjust or alter the beam location and pattern by using a screwdriver or Alan key for most installations. If you find that you aren’t pleased with the light output, this is another great troubleshooting option for you.
