Great Floor Protection at a Fraction of the Cost of Other Options

As I mentioned before, there are a couple companies that have been dominating the floor mat and liner industry over the last few years. I don’t need to name drop. You likely know who I’m talking about. And their custom fit liners are great. Both make an excellent product. I’m not going to complain about them really.

Except to say one thing:

Both of them are a little on the pricey side.

There. I said it. And they are both very well manufactured products, and when it comes to floor liners, you could do worse. In fact, once upon a time, if you wanted a true floor liner, these two were really your only options.

Until now.

Then MAXLINER introduced their SMARTLINER.

But let’s start with the obvious question first.

What’s the difference between a floor mat and a floor liner?

A floor mat, like what probably came installed stock on your vehicle, is just a mat designed to sit on your floorboard and get dirty. A floor liner on the other hand is custom fit to your floor. In other words, a liner must be measured more exactly and then made to conform to the contours of your vehicle’s floorboard.

This becomes a pretty big deal when you’re trying to keep your floor and carpet clean. This is even more important if you’re concerned about resale value of your vehicle. A true custom fit floor liner will wrap your interior floor board in a layer of protection. This liner should be designed to catch dirt, debris, and liquid spills off your interior, leaving the floorboard of your truck or Jeep pristine, just like she was the day you drove her off the lot.

This is one of the reasons why I always caution people to be careful with the terminology when purchasing aftermarket products. If someone calls something a floor mat, it probably isn’t custom fit to your vehicle, and hence it probably won’t protect your floorboard as well as something that is custom fit. However, it used to be that the markup or increase in price from mat to floor liner was pretty significant, so the customer would have to make a decision. Do I save money by going with the floor mat or do I shell out sometimes double the price for these superior floor liners?

Well, today, with SMARTLINER, you can get a superior and true custom fit floor liner for a fraction of the cost. And it comes with some great added benefits too that many of the competitors can’t beat.

So one of the original floor liners out there--won’t say who--has this really not so nice tendency to curl up when it gets really cold out. So we here in the midwest at Midwest Aftermarket, as well as so many others who live in the same climate or one more frigid than our own during the Winter season started running into this issue a couple years back.

Here we are, selling this “top-of-the-line” product, and even we started having this issue. Now the manufacturer says they’re working on it, but the thing is, when you’re paying top dollar, you don’t expect to run into strange curling of your really expensive floor liners during the Winter months.

Then along comes MAXLINER with their new SMARTLINER, and here we are thinking this stuff is so affordable, we’re definitely going to have issues come Winter.

So before we throw them up on the website, we get a few in to test ‘em out. And so far so good. They are a little thinner than some of the competitors, but they fit all of our vehicles really well. And it's hard to say whether thickness in this case is really that much of a big deal. I mean you’re dealing with polyethylene, plastic-like material here. It doesn’t have to be super thick to keep liquid spills and dirt from getting onto your carpet. It just has to be rigid, fit well, and sealed. And it’s all of those things and more.

That’s when we realized, to our astonishment that the old saying doesn’t always hold true.

You get what you paid for?

In this case, we recommend paying less.

Now that other competitor that we haven’t had any issues with, I mean, their product is still great. But you have to start to ask yourself if the price difference is worth the rather small amount of increase in quality.

And again, we aren’t necessarily talking about better quality as in better at keeping your floors clean. All of the floor liners we sell do that.

At the end of the day, we reached the same conclusion really as we did in our Husky Vs. WeatherTech article. It comes down to personal preference for the most part. If you really like the texture of one over the other, then go with it. But as far as getting the most bang for your buck, we really can’t lie:

Now we don’t want to discourage those who already have another product. Heck, I’ve got a different floor liner in my truck right now. Now in order to be a really good floor liner, it must be custom fit to the contours of your vehicle’s floorboard and have some kind of ridge or lip along the edge to prevent the liquid from just flowing right off.

And believe it or not, we’ve actually demoed some floor liners that don’t have that ridge. But SMARTLINERs has one of the best ones we’ve seen.
