This patented style makes FormFit the first company ever to have a paintable hood protector that can match the most popular Fender Flare styles on the market today.

OEM Quality meets Aftermarket Durability: a Review

Tough Guard is made of ABS plastic top coated in acrylic that can be finished in two different sheens: textured swirl or smooth flat. But what do all those words really mean?

ABS is a particular plastic polymer made up of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, an amorphous or shapeable, opaque (non-see through) thermoplastic.

Why is all this useful?

Thermoplastics, like ABS, are able to be molded. They can also be recycled. They are highly durable and can withstand temperatures upwards of 200 degrees (ABS melts or becomes a liquid around 220 degrees, for instance).

Why is this all important?

For starters, the ability to be molded means this substance can be made to the exact shape that you desire.

Duh, right?

I know. Get to the point, cause that’s obvious. But is it? Many of the metal products offered in aftermarket are cast in multiple pieces and then welded together. While the metal itself is very durable, there is a weak point.

You guessed it.

The weld.

So if you truly want a product that is tough, hence Tough Guard, then ideally, you would want that product to be as close to one solid piece as possible. And the bug deflector part of the FormFit Tough Guard is all one solid piece. This adds durability to the hood protector, and it also makes for that super easy install. You just have the mounts and the deflector. Pretty hard to screw that up. And trust me. Kyle and I tried.

The second big reason why this is such a huge plus is that molded material, like ABS which is also super strong when set, can be made into the exact shape you desire. This means that FormFit makes each and every Tough Guard to fit the exact contours of your vehicle’s hood.

In other words, we aren’t talking about no universal product here. Each Tough Guard is custom to fit your exact make, model, and year vehicle. And a hood protector that fits your hood exactly is what you need if you’re trying too--I know, it’s coming--I don’t know, protect your hood.

There. I said it.

So really having a full, solid, one piece, ABS, molded construction is the way to go with hood guards. Whether you are trying to keep your hood and windshield clean from dead bugs or prevent rocks from digging up your finish or glass, a Form Fit Tough Guard is one of the best designed hood protectors on the market today.

Tough Guard won’t Chalk, Fade, or Breakdown

FormFit’s ABS plastic is protected against wind, rain, the Sun’s UV rays, extreme temperatures both hot and cold, and even the dreaded never ending forceful push of time itself.

Oh, and did I mention bugs? Yeah, she’ll hold up against bugs and any other insect like creature that may bounce off your hood when you’re driving down the road. Tough Guard lives up to its name.

Now the thing about bugs and really anything you’re trying to deflect away from your hood and windshield is you need a properly angled guard. This really comes right back to my previous point. If the hood protector isn’t custom fit to your vehicle, the angle might be off.

When it comes to shooting bugs over the top, they are lighter weight, and a shield can help direct wind currents and make a small shift in your aerodynamics.

Picture this: without a hood protector, the wind, when you’re in motion flying down the highway, rushes along your hood until it hits the bottom of your windshield. Once there, it hits the obstruction and is forced up into the air and over the top of your truck.

But add in a properly fit hood protector, like all those made by FormFit, and you’ve altered the aerodynamics of your hood.

Now instead of rushing along, skimming the top of your hood, the air, or force of the air (think wind) when you’re in motion heading down the road, will hit the guard first. At this point, basically what used to happen at your windshield only, starts to happen at the tip of your hood at the deflector. The angle of the air and anything in it is altered. And at the right speed, anything coming off of or having to pass over that Tough Guard will also slip higher into the air and fly right over the top of your cab.

All of this is what makes having a great, solid, one-piece hood guard so important. It’s about air currents, especially when it comes to bugs.

And in case you’re going, I’m not worried about bugs. I’m worry about rocks. Just hold your horses, mister. Cause you should be worried about both.

Remember that old wives tale about the guy who dropped the penny off the Empire State Building.

Well, there’s some truth to that.

When any object, even something as small and light as a penny, reaches terminal velocity, you’re talking about a serious amount of force. Imagine that penny flying at about 120 Miles per Hour? Yeah, that’s going to cause some damage.

But we aren’t dealing with pennies and skyscrapers here.

No, we’re dealing with bugs and windshields.

Now I don’t know exactly how you like to drive your truck, and I won’t make any assumptions for you. But let’s just take myself for instance.

On a hot summer night, I might go cruising out in the country down some back road in my pickup truck. Let’s say we’re heading to or from a bonfire. Probably from. But let’s just say.

You’re out in the middle of nowhere, so maybe you decide to get on her just a little. And when you’ve got a big straight away, and the night is young, and you’re goofing off with your boys or trying to impress your gal, well, maybe you get up to say 80, 90, even 100 MPH.

Not advocating for speeding, but you know, things happen when you’re young and dumb.

Point is, in the clear open country night, you might not hit too many bugs all at once. But what happens when you fly under that solitary street light up at the Trail Junction intersection? Yeah, the front of your vehicle gets peppered with bug carcasses like you just got hit with a shotgun blast full of a spider’s wet dream.

And if you hit those thousands of little buggers going 80, well, let’s just say even at sub terminal velocity, something that tiny can still scratch up your hood, especially if it hits it just right. And even if you don’t get any scrapes, it’s still a paint in the ass to clean up.

It’s the day after these kinds of joy rides (we call ‘em boonie cruises ‘round here) that you really appreciate your hood protector for the first time. Look, it’s great when a hood guard like the Tough Guard looks as sick as it does, but when it prevents you from cleaning loads of dead bug guts off the front of your hood, well, that looks even better, doesn’t it?

Boonie Cruisers Must Have: The FormFit Tough Guard

I’d even call it Boonie Cruiser Approved, and I’d stamp it with the seal of approval myself as a certified Boonie Cruiser.

Paintable to Match your Existing Hardware

The acrylic top coat on the Tough Guard comes in two different finishes. The Textured Finish gives you a rugged look that is likely to match many OEM parts on your Truck or Jeep. The Smooth Finish is flat and can be painted.

We, and FormFit, for that matter, recommend you have it painted by a professional in order to make sure the color matches your existing Aftermarket products, like paintable Fender Flares, for instance. These two finish options mean you can get your Tough Guard to match just about whatever paint job or texture or sheen you can imagine. Personally we like the Black Satin Finish cause it matches our sweet project truck for this year, but hey, each their own.

No Drill Installation

Most important point here is that you don’t have to drill into or damage your hood to install these bad boys. While the stainless steel bolts are mostly just for show--aesthetic only--they technically attach to a mounting bracket that is fastened to your hood using a 3M Automotive tape. The Tough Guard is also attached using patented mounting clips and stainless steel fasteners, but we’re pretty sure that 3M tape--which is no joke--is more than enough.

Those looking for a sweet hood guard that doesn’t require any drilling to install need look no further. FormFit’s Tough Guard is the hood protector for you. As you can see from the image above, there is absolutely no contact between the bug deflector itself and your hood, so there is no risk to your paint job. FormFit has thought of everything!
