Extang Solid Fold 2.0 Hard Tri-Fold Tonneau Cover

There are a lot of tri-folding truck bed covers out there, and sometimes it is hard to distinguish one from the next. You might see one brand that sits a little bit more flush on your truck bed rails or one that has a fiberglass top. One might feature glossy black panels while another model has matte black ones. It is hard to find a true stand out tonneau cover in this cramped field. Most are just minor iterations on what has already been done from the very beginning:

Three interlocking panels attached to a rail system designed to protect your gear and truck bed from the elements and prying eyes.

But when Extang redesigned their Solid Fold cover and upgraded it to 2.0, something innovative occured. They didn’t just iterate. They didn’t just paint the old cover matte black and say here’s the new one.

No, they upgraded and redesigned to make this cover superior and easier to use. In fact, if you are looking for a tri-fold cover that is very water tight, easy to open and close, simple to install, extremely durable, has a matte black powder coat finish to match OEM trim, and still looks good while doing it, then this is probably the best option currently out there.

And it is pretty rare that we can say that.

Here’s the thing: with the redesign and the addition of replaceable three finned weather seals along the edge, this cover went from simply easy to use, remove, and install, to one of the most watertight covers we’ve seen to date.

Add in the shocking durability, and you’ve got to admit that Extang really knocked it out of the park with this one. In fact, during some of their stress testing, we’ve seen this cover stacked with upwards of 12 cinder blocks evenly spaced across it, and the darn thing didn’t even bend. That’s roughly 400 lbs of evenly distributed weight. I wouldn’t put that on my old tonneau cover without having a brand new Extang Solid Fold 2.0 sitting nearby to replace my old crappy truck bed cover--that’s for sure.

And we’re really just scratching the surface--pun intended--when it comes to this new Extang 2.0 Solid Fold.

As if that wasn’t enough, all those great cosmetic upgrades that others are labeling as major redesigns--well, they are here too in addition to these more elaborate functional and material redesigns / upgrades.

You’ve got your matte black finish here to match your OEM trim and other aftermarket accessories. Matte black is in. It is hot. People want their trucks to be cohesive, to match. And with chrome falling out of style with many truck owners, and most truck bed caps now coming standard on most trim levels, and those stock caps coming in--you guessed it--matte black, the Extang is poised to make a real smash as far as style points go.

But again, that really isn’t that new. Most folding tonneau covers out there today offer a matte black version.

But Extang has gone above and beyond again by also including a powder coat. Powder coats are great for adding durability above and beyond that of bare materials, such as metals and thermoplastics. In this particular instance, we already have a solid TPO panel, so adding on the powder coat is really just gravy. And who doesn’t like a little gravy on top?

Extang could have gone with a steel or plastic skeleton for this particular model as well. Steel would have been very durable, but perhaps too rigid and prone to rust. Plastic would have been more affordable but not strong enough to handle say 12 cinder blocks.

They opted for the more expensive, higher quality material and went with aluminum. While a bit more costly to manufacture, aluminum will not rust, it has a very high tensile strength for its mass, and it is very light weight, meaning this cover will be easier for someone like my wife to fold up on a daily basis.

It’s starting to look like Extang knocked it out of the park with this one. So you might start to wonder if there are any major downsides to the Solid Fold 2.0.

Well, I gotta tell you, Extang designers, on a personal note: I’m not too thrilled by the name. Solid Fold just isn’t as sexy as I’d like it to be. But maybe that’s just me. And that certainly isn’t a downside.

There are probably only two of note here, and both are pretty minor.

First, to open the cover, you do have to release both Speed Clamps or EZLock clamps (on the old version). There’s one on each side of your truck bed securing the cover down to the bed caps. Some covers unlock and unlatch by simply pulling on a cord in the middle or on one side. But since the Extang Solid Fold 2.0 doesn’t have bed rails, there’s no place for the cover to latch like that. Instead you need the Speed Klamps. But that’s awfully minor, really. And when you consider the added security of two klamps that instead of just holding the cover in place like many traditional tri-folds that these clamps actually compress the cover down onto the rails, sealing the edges via those nifty triple fin weather seals, you start to realize that this is actually also one of the biggest positives about this redesign. Without the clamps, this isn’t one of the most watertight truck bed covers on the market, after all. So I think I’ll take the clamps, thank you very much.

The next possible negative is that this cover does not fold all the way up. The third panel, the one up by the bulkhead, is locked in place. Some tri-folds fold all the way up until the cover is resting against the back window of the truck cab. This isn’t a position you should be driving in anyway, so that really isn’t that big of a deal.

But I’m constantly harping about full bed access and how useful it is at times. Sometimes, especially when moving large items, you just have to have true full bed access. And with that final panel locked in place, you just aren’t going to get that.

However, did we mention how easy it is to release those Jaw-Grip clamps up at the bulkhead?

Yeah, you can remove the entire cover itself in under five minutes. You don’t need any tools at all. Just fold it up, slide underneath that final panel, loosen the two Jaw-Grip clamps, and you can lift her right off. You might want a second person to help you get it out of the truck bed, but compared to say a retractable cover that has a huge canister and takes up lots of truck bed space, this is all super easy to do.

In the end, even those two “issues” are seen to be minor if not not even issues at all. It is hard to not say that the Extang Solid Fold 2.0 just might be the best hard folding truck bed cover on the market today. I think when its time for me to upgrade, I’m going to be giving Extang a second long and hard look because I like the way this baby looks and the features are hard to beat.
