No time to read this whole article? Just want the quick and dirty dets? “Too long; didn’t read” your fav acronym? Don’t worry. We hear ya. Here’s our Midwest Aftermarket Bullet Point Breakdown of the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch:
Towing is an American past time. Whether you pull a trailer for your job or family farm or like hitting the road with a camper or RV trailer, part of the reason we all love trucks so much is their capability to tow mega loads.
Heck, it’s in all the ads even these days. Think back to a recent truck ad you say on TV or the YouTubes. Every last one of them had some stat about how much that particular truck could tow.
And there’s ample reason to do so. We like going places and bringing stuff with us. Whether you’re moving across State lines and are trying to do it all in one go or you mow 10 yards a week with your zero turn mower and side gig business, you need to haul some equipment around, and to do so, you need a truck and a heavy duty hitch.
When it comes to the really big stuff, like pulling a trailer that literally has a tractor on it or a camper Recreational Trailer, you’re gonna need a 5th wheel hitch.
A 5th wheel is a hitch that mounts to your truck’s bed so that really big trailers such as heavy equipment haulers or even livestock trailers and larger campers can be towed by a regular pickup truck with a bed.
If you’ve got a flat bed, don’t worry. B&W has you covered there too, but you’ll be looking for a slightly different version of the Companion. That’s why I phrased it like that.
These 5th wheel hitches are elevated so that you can pull your trailer with it mounted into your truck’s bed.
Back in the day, 5th wheel hitches, much like goosenecks, required true commitment upon the truck owner’s part. Installing one of these style hitches typically involved rails and welding into your truck bed itself, if not some cutting too to connect to your frame. This not only distressed some truck owners, but often meant that serious towing, like the kind that requires a 5th wheel hitch, would only be done in a business environment because you basically had to have a dedicated pickup truck, and often times going with a flat bed too was more optimal.
Until B&W came across this problem, and flipped the script, so to speak, when a couple guys from a small Midwestern town tackled these kinds of towing issues by inventing the Turnoverball.
It was the 1987. Fiji had just become its own Republic, the first Simpson’s short as well as the debut episode of Full House had recently debuted. Ronald Reagan had just told Mr. Gorbacheve to “tear down this wall” in Berlin, Germany. And two down to earth guys from Humboldt, Kansas were unknowingly about to change the game of American towing forever.
Their names were Roger Baker and Joe Works.
Baker knew his way around automobiles, but his classic car restorer business had taken a hit during the ‘80’s, and he was looking for a more reliable source of income.
Works came from a farming family, and the profit on most local cash crops had been rough, and with the unforeseeable 1988-89 drought looming, he too was looking for a better way to support his family.
Both had ample experience in the towing department, Baker hauling classic cars to and from sale and various shows, Works from hauling farm equipment. And both saw the need for a redesign of the traditional gooseneck hitch.
So they founded a company together, called Baker and Works--B&W for short. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Their redesigned gooseneck, the Turnoverball, changed the towing industry forever. Before this ingenious design came into existence, you had to have your gooseneck hitch or 5th Wheel hitch welded into your truck bed which often involved cutting into the bed itself and permanently installing these styles of hitches.
This meant you had to have a dedicated truck just for towing. And the average every day American consumer often couldn’t afford that kind of investment on top of the trailer and / or RV purchase they needed the hitch for the in first place. So towing large loads was just not very convenient or easy for that matter.
But the Turnoverball changed all of that. And B&W wasn’t done yet. Because after revolutionizing gooseneck hitches and towing, they decided to tackle another big problem in the industry: 5th Wheel Towing.
The Companion was designed to do what the Turnoverball did for goosenecks: give you an easy to use hitch with a quiet and stable towing experience, all with the ability to remove the hitch completely and offer that full bed access every truck owner has stock but used to lose the second they installed a gooseneck or 5th wheel hitch.
And the Companion does just that.
The system starts with the Turnoverball. This revolutionary gooseneck hitch is mounted underneath your truck bed instead of on top of it. This means no welding and no permanently mounted gooseneck in the middle of your truck bed. Instead, you only need to cut a 4” hole in your truck bed, and the Turnoverball hitch can be flipped or turned over so that you can still have a level truck bed for hauling whatever you want.
While the Turnoverball changed the gooseneck game, the Companion, a companion 5th wheel hitch to the Turnoverball, took it one step farther.
This 5th Wheel hitch connects to the Turnoverball system, making welding, cutting, and mounting rails a thing of the past. The Companion is able to give your 5th wheel that additional height needed without sacrificing your truck bed.
Simply install it by attaching it to the Turnoverball when you need to tow something. Then remove it from your truck bed when you don’t.
And B&W didn’t stop there. They also made sure that the wrap around jaws were flawlessly manufactured down to such a precision level that they have less than a paper’s thickness of gap between your kingpin and the jaws themselves. This means no sudden catching and bumping or rocky starts and stops. Plus it makes for a smooth and quiet towing experience all around. And we haven’t even breached the topic of safety yet.
If you’re looking for an all around better towing experience, look no further. The B&W Companion to the Turnoverball is the 5th Wheel Hitch to rule all other hitches. Full stop.
And did we mention that this versatile and innovative hitch is made in America, up in Humboldt, Kansas, still today? That the company is largely employee owned? And that they only use American steel?
Yup. Pretty much.
If you want a quality hitch made here in the US, then there’s no need to keep shopping around. The Companion 5th Wheel hitch is the right buy for you. Just make sure to pick up your Turnoverball too cause you’re gonna need ‘em both. These two pair so well together it’s almost like they designed them to work in tandem.
Spoiler alert: they did.
That’s why they call it the Companion in the first place. This is the 5th Wheel Companion to the Turnoverball, after all.
