Review of the BD Diesel TS Booster Throttle Sensitivity Response Controller

We’ve all had that perfect ride over the years. Whether yours was a turbo charged F-150 or a heavily modded Jeep Wrangler, I’m sure just like me you look back on it with nostalgia and longing. And while your current ride might have huge improvements over the old, dream ride in your mind, whether that be more horsepower or better fuel economy or even just more tech options in the cab, I personally think that what we really miss is the way vehicles used to handle before all the computers and technology got involved.

And don’t get me wrong. The technological revolution has vastly transformed our vehicles into modern marvels in so many ways. I don’t really want to go back. But there was something about the way my old Chevy pickup truck used to handle and accelerate when I got on the pedal. And again, don’t get me wrong. I don’t long for the old days without anti-lock brakes. I don’t wish we only had radios with cassette tape decks or no GPS modules, though I do enjoy studying an old school map from time to time. I’m no luddite.

But wouldn’t it be great if we could pick and choose which aspects of our old school mechanical rides and our new souped up technologically superior vehicles our current ride had? Wouldn’t it be great to customize your ride to exactly what you wanted at any given time?

And of course, many of you, even myself, are thinking about serious tuning right now. Modifying your curves, customizing the entire performance of your vehicle, and adjusting your fuel ratios.

But that’s not for everybody. Some of us want to stay as close to stock as possible. Some of us, myself included, have to do emissions testing every year, and it’s a pain in the butt to flash back to stock all the time. And many are intimidated or just not interested in that kind of modification.

We just want our rides to drive the way we want them to, without any of that technical stuff or ECU reprogramming. 

And for those of us who just want to adjust handling or really just pedal response, there’s Throttle Response Controllers.

What was perhaps the most surprising thing I personally noticed when testing out the TS Booster from BD Diesel was finding the right setting for me. When we first got this baby out of the packaging, I immediately though that Ludicrous or at least Race was going to be my setting of choice.

What self respecting truck owning male wouldn’t jump right to that, I ask you?

Of course, these modes do exactly what they claim to do: boost throttle response to ridiculous (or should we say ludicrous) levels!

What shocked me isn’t what the TS Booster could do, but rather what my truck could! With the module on Ludicrous mode, just a quick tap on the pedal and my tires would start spinning in place. We’re talking Burn Out mode here. And if that’s what you’re looking for, and sometimes, let’s just be honest, that’s exactly what I’m looking for, then this is the setting you want to be in.

However, I don’t just drive my truck for fun. I drive it for work and play both. And let’s just say that for many of us, Ludicrous mode isn’t going to be your daily driver mode.

Which is fine and exactly why BD Diesel has all those different modes for you to play around with, so that you can find the perfect setting for the way you want to drive when you want to drive.

So if I’m tooling around town with my buddies and we’re doing burnouts, yeah: Ludicrous FTW! But when I’m commuting to work, I’ll click it down to Eco.

I guess that’s the beauty of this Throttle Sensitivity Response Controller. It has a little bit of everything for every driver. I found, for instance, that I was getting somewhere between 3 to 5 gallons more per mile when in Eco mode. Now, you better bet those were almost entirely highway miles, and you can also be assured that when I go to pass someone driving to slow, I was often shifting up into Race. So again, your mileage may vary.

After about a week playing around with this new throttle controller, I found that my person sweet spot with my Chevy Silverado was Sport mode. It removed the pedal lag that so many of us encounter on these newer vehicles, while still giving me the nuance of throttle control that I personally desire. And again, that’s just me in one vehicle. You better bit if I was rocking this baby in a sports car, I’d probably be on Race mode most of the time. But for my truck and my personal driving style, this was exactly what I was looking for.

Added points for this great new product include the fact that I don’t have to uninstall it every time I go to get emissions tested, which is currently once a year where I live. Flashing back to stock every year is kind of a pain in the butt, but I’m finding that I’m getting that driving experience I’ve been looking for with this throttle response controller without having to use a tuner on top of it.

But again, that’s just me. To add more beauty to this sweet new device, there’s nothing saying you couldn’t double up: if you wanted to load a custom tune from a programmer and still use the TS Booster, more power to you.
