The big question is not whether to level or not. It’s whether you should level or lift. Both will give you some added clearance to upgrade wheels and tires. But there are many great reasons to go with a Leveling Kit over a full suspension lift kit. Here’s our top 5:

Wheels & Tires

While there are a myriad of reasons why someone would want to lift or level their truck or Jeep, one of the most common and probably best reasons is to increase clearance so you can install bigger Wheels and Tires.

Sometimes larger tires is about looks, and they certainly do give your truck that curb appeal. If you want something that is reminiscent of the monster trucks you love, but don’t want to spring for the full lift kit, a leveling kit with new wheels and tires can be a great alternative.

We have many customers who just want to get bigger and more rugged aftermarket wheels put on their trucks. Whether you’re looking at some sweet new Fuel wheels or some rugged Black Rhinos or even stylish SOTA, getting to that larger wheel size is often a must.

And there are certainly other reasons to go bigger than just curb appeal.

After all: we all know, size matters.

Personally, I like having bigger tires and wheels installed also because it makes it easier for me to get under my truck without the use of a jack or ramps. Nothing wrong with using ramps, and hey, my dream home garage has a full lift on it or maybe a pit.

Both?

Sure, why not.

So whether you’re changing your own oil or installing your own step bars, having your truck further off the ground is almost always a plus.

Fuel Economy

I did say, almost always. One of the downsides to having a lifted or leveled truck is fuel economy. Today's vehicles are built with aerodynamics in mind. And it turns out, being big and extending high into the air is not so great for drag and hence fuel usage.

Darn. Who knew?!

So anytime you are changing the way your vehicle rides, you are likely to see some minor shifts in fuel economy. And just about anytime you install a full lift kit on your truck, you’re likely to see fuel costs go up.

However, many leveling kits don’t throw your aerodynamics off as much as full lift kits. In fact, in certain conditions, such as towing a trailer, you might actually see fuel economy stay the same or even go up a little after installing a lift kit.

In general, we can say though that lift kits will hurt your fuel economy more than leveling kits. To this end, we would like to emphasize the real world costs of both. Not only does a leveling kit cost less up front, but it will likely cost less overtime too.

Towing

While your truck is perfectly capable of towing stock, there’s nothing wrong with putting a little aftermarket into her to give her a leg up, so to speak. While most of the time when we are talking about improving towing, I’d be suggesting taking a look at tuners and performance related products, leveling kits actually help some too.

While your truck is designed to keep its nose down a little for aerodynamics and such, when you’re towing a trailer or camper, as your weight distribution shifts, you are likely to see the nose of your truck come up some. But a leveling kit could help offset this issue.

The reason is that since the leveling kit brings down the nose of your truck some most of the time, once the weight shifts further back due to towing, you’ll see less lift at the front of your truck, meaning you should have more aerodynamics and likely even better handling.

Now towing and leveling don’t have to go hand and hand, per se. Rather, we would like to emphasize that lifted trucks often struggle with towing, whereas, in comparison, leveled trucks tend to handle much better.

Of course, with the proper equipment and hitch, you can still tow with the lifted truck. But it can be a real pain and often is not advisable with larger lifts especially.

Twisted Steel & Sex Appeal

If you’re mostly after that lifted look, but you don’t want to shell out all the cash for an actual full suspension lift, then leveling is where it is at.

While a 3 inch spacer won’t give you anything like the look of say an 8 inch lift, your truck will look like it is higher off the ground than a comparable model with a complete stock suspension. And again, half the reason for raising her up anyway is putting on those sweet aftermarket wheels, which definitely give you all that curb appeal and then some.

Super Easy, Bolt On Install

Another great feature of these Rugged Off Road Leveling Kits and Steel Spacers are just how easy they are to install. With a full lift kit, you are looking at cutting and making modifications because the extreme lift causes a shift in your suspension geometry. This means not only that the install is going to be much more complicated, but also that you will experience more wear and tear on your vehicle.

With a leveling kit, your suspension geometry is not altered very much because you are only raising your vehicle up by 1 to 3 inches. This means there will be less wear and tear on your vehicle than if you lifted it.

A leveling kit is also much easier to install as well. Whereas a lift kit involves replacing struts and shocks as well as messing around with ball joints and axles sometimes, a leveling kit is so much simpler that you might even be able to do it from the comfort of your own home garage.

Most strut spacers can be installed with the use of a jack or jack stands and a socket set. Strut spacers adjust the way your struts sit and raise the front end of your vehicle up some from the ground, leveling it off with the back of your vehicle.

Most heavy duty strut spacers are made from steel like these durable Rugged Off Road Leveling Kit spacers. But some of the cheaper spacers may be made from aluminum or even polyurethane and rubber, so make sure you know what you are getting for the price before you order.

At the end of the day, a lot of what drives our purchasing decisions is the cost of the product itself. No matter how much you want to lift or level your vehicle, if financially you just can’t swing it, then it just isn’t going to happen. 

That’s the bottom line for most of us. A full suspension lift kit can cost you over a thousand dollars. But a pair of strut spacers typically is a hundred or so, max.
