RetraxOne MX Retractable Tonneau Cover

What more can one say about such a versatile and stylish truck bed cover as the RetraxOne MX? As far as retractable tonneau covers go, you can’t go wrong with Retrax. We’ve been ranting and raving about the RetraxPro MX for some time now, so make sure you check that one out too if you’re into the matte black finish. The Pro features aluminum slats, making it even more secure than the One. But if thermoplastic is more your thing, then the One is the cover for you.

What sets the RetraxONE MX apart from a lot of the other retractable covers out there is that this particular tonneau is fabricated out of one single sheet of thermoplastic polycarbonate. That might not seem like that big of a deal to the average truck driver out there, but this design philosophy actually changes the entire dynamic of the cover itself.

First, there are no hinges or openings in the cover itself. Whereas many retractable covers are composed of slats that are hinged together, this is a one piece construction. This makes the RetraxONE MX and really the entire design family better at keeping the elements out from under your cover.

We aren’t about to make the claim that this cover is 100% watertight or that it is completely secure. But when you compare two separate tonneau covers and one has hinges and gaps and the other doesn’t, one of them is clearly more weather resistant and tight than the other.

Secondly, when you make the bulk of the cover out of one solid sheet of thermoplastic, you’ve eliminated a number of failure points. Whereas on other covers you might run into issues with hinges locking up or rusting or just breaking, this cover has no hinges whatsoever.

Likewise, there are no joints through which rain or dust or dirt might seep. This single design decision really does elevate this entire product line above many of the straight competitors out there.

All in all, retractable covers in general are some of the most secure and water resistant covers on the market. In general, the solid hard frame coupled with solid slats or one-piece construction as in the Retrax ONE, make for a tonneau cover that is way more secure than say a soft vinyl roll up cover.

But that’s really just the tip of the iceberg, because once you understand the difference between one piece construction and slats, you start to see how durable and dependable this kind of cover really is compared to other designs currently out there on the market today.

Now that’s not to say that there aren’t any drawbacks to going with this particular retractable over another style cover like a tri-fold or a soft roll up.

For starters, as with any and every retractable cover, you are not going to have true 100% bed access with the cover installed. Every retractable has a canister mounted at the bulkhead of the truck bed. This canister is where the cover retracts or rolls up into. So you will be giving up some space at the front of your truck bed if you go with any retractable cover, whether a Retrax or not.

A positive note to the RetraxONE MX though is that it features a compact storage container that is smaller than many canisters on the market today, so you’ll be losing less space than you might with another model.

With that being said, if full bed access is important to you, you might want to consider some other tonneau cover options out there. Roll ups and hard folding covers often have this option. The big aspect of full access is if you’re looking to haul larger equipment or furniture. If you are regularly moving large items like this that require a lot of space in your truck bed, you might want to reconsider. Likewise if you mainly use your truck bed for construction purposes and hauling materials like drywall or large sheets of plywood and lumber, you may want to consider this as well. This canister and most on the market do allow for space underneath the canister to still be utilized even when the cover is installed, so unless you’re getting a large load of say 10 or more sheets of drywall, you’re probably going to be golden. But these are aspects of the cover we want you to be well aware of before you buy a cover from us.

At the end of the day, we want you to get the cover you want at a great price. There’s no sense in you finding out the shortcomings of a particular brand or style down the road once you’ve already installed it. We prefer honesty around here and hope you appreciate it.

With all that being said, you’d be hard pressed to find a better retractable tonneau cover, especially for the price. The RetraxONE MX is a solid matte black plastic retractable that won’t steer you wrong and looks great on your truck’s bed.
