What more do you need to know about this fantastic Retractable Cover:

When you’re shopping for a tonneau cover, there are a few key aspects that you should focus on first. These aspects or questions are really more about you than your truck, or rather more about how you use your truck.

You need to ask yourself seriously and consider how you have utilized your truck in the past and how you plan to in the future.

And if you’re married or have friends and family who often borrow the truck, consider how they use it too. Then and only then start looking at tonneau covers.

That might seem vague, so let me explain in more detail. Let’s say you and your family seem to have a problem with chronically moving, or at least it feels that way because someone is always asking you to help them move. Then you need to think about how your cover will affect your ability to help your friends and family move their stuff from one place to another.

Maybe you regularly carry large equipment for work purposes or for hobbies and such. This may change your decision to go with one truck bed cover over another one.

The reasoning has to do with how your tonneau cover works and how much space it takes up from your truck bed.

So with the RetraxPRO MX, let’s start with the one (and probably the only) possible shortcoming you might run into:

You will not have true full bed access with this tonneau cover.

Now depending on how you use your truck bed, this might not even be a factor. Let me explain what we mean.

All retractable tonneau covers utilize some form of canister which will be located at the front of the truck bed, up by the bulkhead and your cab.

This canister is a container that guides the retractable truck bed cover up into itself for storage when you have the cover open. While the canister on the Retrax PRO is one of the smallest we’ve seen, it is still a canister and it will still take up some space.

And again, we like to be honest here. We want you to get the cover you want and need on your truck. We love the RetraxPRO MX and think it is a superior product, or we wouldn’t carry it. But we do want to make this 100% clear. This is likely it's one shortcoming and it probably effects very few people, but we want to get it out there up front.

Not having full truck bed access, like you would say with a roll up tonneau cover, could make moving larger furniture and appliances more of a pain. Since the canister does take up some truck bed space, this does mean that you are losing out on some loading area. So if you have a 6 foot bed so you can haul items that are 6 foot long by 1 foot tall, the canister could be a real issue. If you’re just going to slide two or three sheets of drywall or a sheet of plywood that’s nearly our full bed length into your truck bed, you should be fine as that will fit under the canister at the bulkhead.

But you do lose some space with any retractable cover.

Now that the one possible negative is out of the way, let’s talk about how RetraxPRO has probably solved that issue with one clever feature: a lock.

Seems simple enough, but it is true.

Since the Retrax PRO MX comes with a key which can lock the cover in any position, hauling items of various sizes can actually be easier to do with the PRO than with a soft roll up. Part of the concern with not having full truck bed space is that you’d want to load larger and taller furniture or appliances up at the bulkhead traditionally when you’ve moving someone.

But the ability to lock the cover in any position may help with this, as you can play that lovely tetris game those of us who move others often know all too much about to wedge and secure a larger item in further back in the truck bed.

And since you can lock the tonneau cover in any possible position, you could put smaller items like boxes up against the canister, then wedge a fridge or dresser in and pull the cover right up to it. Tie the large item down, and pack in the rest with other stuff, and you’re good to go.

Again, something that seemed like it might be a negative, actually is easily overcome due to this one great feature.

And if you ever find yourself having to haul an item that won’t fit under your cover along with other items that you definitely want under it, this locking mechanism is going to be super handy.

For me, it’s weekend grocery and hardware runs with my son. I often find I need something large from the local hardware store, whether that be large storage items or lumber or tools, that requires me to at least crack the tonneau open some.

But then when we go to get groceries, I don’t want those exposed to the elements on the way home, so I tuck them in under the cover, pull it as close to closed as I can, and I don’t have to worry about my fruits and vegetables flying out the back of the truck bed. I say fruits and veggies cause I let the meat and beers ride in the back seat, for safety and because I love them so much.

The next big feature of the tonneau that needs a little more coverage is the canister itself and this stellar water drainage system. No matter what retractable cover you end up getting, you’re going to want to make sure you have a solid drainage system with a tube to drain water out.

Water is going to get into your canister. There’s no way around it. Even if you always have your cover completely closed when it rains, the moisture on the cover will find its way into the canister over time or when you open the cover after the rain has stopped. So you're going to want a solid drainage system to make sure your not carrying any water in the container.

The RetraxPRO also features their brilliant spiral track system, which makes it so that when the cover is retracted into the canister, no part of your tonneau ever touches another part as it is rolled up into a cylinder.

A common issue with cheaper retractables is friction from one part of the tonneau rubbing the top of another part during simple operations like this over time. No one wants to waste money on a cheap product that is going to wear down over time simply by you using it the way it is supposed to be used. Retrax has solved this issue in a very intelligent way.

At the end of the day, if you’re in the market for a retractable tonneau cover, you’d be hard pressed to find a better one than the RetraxPRO MX. The fact that it is aluminum also means it is lightweight and it will not rust. Yet it is double walled for extra durability.
