A Must-Have for Every Truck Cab

I know that line probably seems like an exaggeration, but before you hollar and cry foul, hear me out. Also, I dare you to go and have a look under your back seat. You know it's a mess back there.

When I first picked up my first truck, back in the day, I didn’t even have a back seat. But I can tell you, I still stored all shorts of sh!t I didn’t think I would need behind my driver’s seat. It started out as necessity. I picked up some jumper cables, because my brother called me up and his car was dead, so he needed a jump.

Easy solution. Buy cables, run over to campus, jump his car. Done.

Now where do I store them? Behind my seat.

The first thing I thought about when getting my truck wasn’t storing stuff inside the cab. I was excited to be able to haul stuff around, tackle projects around the house, help my family and friends move--okay, maybe not that last one. But I wasn’t thinking about storing stuff inside the cab.

Today, with my 2012 Silverado, I know better.

And here’s why: I didn’t have any truck cab storage for a long time. And one time my wife went to get into the backseat of my truck cause my grandma was riding shotgun--long story. Anyway, I never heard the end of that. I had mail and papers in the floorboard, a few empty Mountain Dew bottles, and that was just the trash. Underneath that layer of rubbish was my jumper cables, a handy socket set, a couple screwdrivers, one of my spare carpenter’s belts, a couple boxes of nails and screws, and apparently my handy man tool bag, which just so happened to be unzipped and partially spilled out. Whoops.

Needless to say, I got an earful the whole way to Cracker Barrel for dinner. Good thing it’s only like a 15 minute drive.

A few weeks later, I saw my first Husky Gearbox at work. And I was like, oh, that’s what I need.

I never looked back.

These days there are a few more options in the truck cab storage category. But the general principle remains the same: truck cab storage helps you organize your stuff that you always drive around with, keeps them safe and out of sight, and fits conveniently under you back seat, out of the way.

Husky Gearbox

My old standby, the first truck cab storage I ever saw was a Gearbox. There’s a few things I want to point out in case you’ve never seen one of these babies. Of course, the pictures above show it just fine.

One of the great features about Husky’s Gearbox and some other cab storage options, is that it is custom made to fit your specific vehicle’s make, model, and cab size. This means the designers over at Husky took the time and the measurements to figure out exactly how tall and wide the Gearbox would need to be to fit under your back seat.

There is no wasted space, in other words. And since the Gearbox is designed to rise up flush against the bottom of your backseat for most makes and models, it just looks like it belongs there once you’ve got it installed.

Installed? That is really too technical of a term for it, because “installation” of a Gearbox is basically removing it from the cardboard box, rising up your back seat, and sliding it under.

It comes equipped with anti-skid surfacing, so once you put it in, it isn’t going no where.

I used to think that wasn’t a big deal, but then I recalled my previous adventures before I got my Gearbox. I would be looking for a tool that I knew I had in my backseat somewhere. Maybe my carpenter’s knife or often it would be a Philips screw driver, of which I probably have five in my cab at all times because they keep f$%@ing disappearing on me. Am I right?

Almost every time the tool I’d be looking for would have rolled up under the driver’s seat or the passengers, in such a way that I’d have to lay out and stretch just to reach the damn thing. It was a pain in the butt and kind of frustrating. I always feel like my jobs take extra time from what I think they will. I used to think this was because I’m a bit of a perfectionist at times--I blame my father, who I love dearly, but when dad tells you to measure twice and cut once, right? Now I’m thinking the length of my projects might have more to do with being disorganized and not knowing exactly where the right tool for the job is.

I live by that old school motto of picking the right tool for the job also, so when I can’t find it, but I know it is somewhere, it’s like I’m on a quest until I figure out where it’s gone. 9 times out of ten it has fallen somewhere or slid somewhere around in my truck cab or tool box. Every once in a while--*glances around to see if anyone is watching, lowers his voice*--it has been moved by my wife cause she was “cleaning.”

Sometimes, I’ll sleep in on the weekends only to find out once I wake up that she’s been “cleaning” my truck. And suddenly I can’t find any of my tools and stuff that I always know will be handy cause they are always in my backseat.

Well, not anymore, my friends. I guess it’s out of sight, out of mind. If I store it under my backseat, in my Husky Gearbox, it’s like a wife proof zone. She never even looks in there. Instead, when she glances into my backseat, I hear a gentle sigh of relief because it looks clean (minus the occasional Mountain Dew bottle).

In other words, Husky Gearbox saved my marriage.

Alright, that might be a slight exaggeration. But it couldn’t have hurt.

Part of what I like about Gearbox is that it creates separate little compartments, so I can put my jumper cables on one side and my flashlight and tool kit on the other. This way I never lose anything or can’t find what I’m looking for. The tool is exactly where I left it. I can’t slide around or end up under the front seat.

I also like the material of my Husky Gearbox. It is sturdy and durable. The Gearbox doesn’t feel flimsy like some other storage options do.

And again, it looks like it belongs in my back seat under the seat, like it is an OEM product, even though it is pure aftermarket. Personally, that’s a plus for me.

One negative of the Gearbox might be that it only comes in Black. So if you’ve got a particular color in mind, and it isn’t black, then you might want to look at our other storage options. But if black is your jam, then Husky has you covered.

The Husky Lifetime Guarantee

Finally, I as well as all of my co-workers are Husky fans for good reason. Their products are tough and designed to last a lifetime. And to prove that, Husky backs them all up with their Husky Lifetime Guarantee.

Made in the US of A

We also like supporting American workers around here. And I’m happy and proud to say that all of Husky’s products are designed and manufactured right here in the USA.

At the end of the day, it becomes pretty clear why we love Husky Liners so much, and the Gearbox is no exception. They make some really great products.

Bonus Features of the GearBox

I’m sure many of you are familiar with our YouTube by now. Well, we often get Kyle into various shenanigans on that YouTube page. And a while back we did a little spoof ad involving the Husky GearBox for National Pudding Day.

While this silly stunt was… well, ridiculous to say the least, we did learn something from playing with all that pudding, besides that it is loaded with enough sugar to put you into diabetic shock. Turns out the Husky Liners GearBox is fairly watertight too.

Now we aren’t saying you should fill your GearBox with pudding and drive around with it back there, cause that’s just plain silly. But what we are saying is that should you spill something in it or store something wet back there like a wet towel or snorkel equipment--I don’t know what you do in your free time--it won’t hurt a thing.

Furthermore, the GearBox will prevent your interior from getting wet in that situation as well. And should you have a spill or something, turns out that Gearbox is very easy to clean too.

I used to ride around with a couple quarts of oil and some anti-freeze in my old truck’s cab. I can’t imagine what kind of mess I would have had on my hands if I’d spilled either. With the Husky GearBox though, cleaning up is easy.

You just uninstall, or remove, the GearBox from your truck’s cab. Then spray it out with a hose. Done and done.

Again, I am not even sure if this has ever been considered a feature before, but it is nice to know that the GearBox is easy to clean and watertight too.
